I am not gonna lie though - it hurt my pocketbook a little bit. BUT I will have fresh veggies from May through October! I went with a new farm this year and I feel a bit bad. My farm last year was certified organic and the nicest people in the world! But they do a you buy in and spend what you bought in buying whatever you like (I don’t think that sentence remotely made sense). Their selection was small and if I couldn’t get there early the good stuff was picked over.
This year I am going with Whitton Farms. They are not certified organic, but they use organic practices which is all I need to know. Certifications just mean it will cost me more. I will get a big bag of assorted goodies every week. This will force me to try out new things each week.
So friggin stoked! Fresh veggies and soon fresh eggs every day. Happy me!
The Mass Poisoning Of Humanity An Exploration Of Human Stupidity
By Mike Adams NewsTarget.com 11-27 -5
More Poison From Dentists - Fluoride That’s not the end of the toxicity in the world of dentistry, we also h ave dentists pushing for, get this, the dripping of a highly toxic chemical waste product into the water supply… a substance that’s scraped off the smokestacks of industrial polluters. They want every person in the community to actually drink this substance. This material is a toxic waste that’s regulated by the EPA. It would be illegal to drip it into a river or a stream, but for some reason, it is perfectly legal to drip it into the public water supply and let people drink it. It’s a bizarre cycle of rationalization that can only be called medical lunacy. They no longer consider this toxic substance toxic if it passes through the bodies of human beings first. What substance am I talking about? Fluorosilicic acid, otherwise known by its short name, fluoride. Across the country and around the world, dentists are insisting that we drip fluoride into the public water supply. For what purpose? To protect the teeth? Can you be serious? People are swallowing this liquid. They’re not rinsing it in their mouth and spitting it out, they’re ingesting it. Now as a result we have fluorosis, and bone disorders that are related to the over-consumption of fluoride. For some reason, dentists have decided that they now have medical degrees, and that they want to medicate the entire population with a drug, a biologically active drug, without first diagnosing any individual in that community. In other words, they want to medicate everyone across the board with the exact same dosage, regardless of that person’s individual health needs, and regardless of how much other fluoride they may be exposed to on a regular basis. This is the insanity of the modern dentistry community. Remember, these are the same people that want to put mercury in your mouth, so it only makes sense that they also want to poison your entire body by putting fluorosilicic acid into the water supply. They don’t call it fluorosilicic acid of course, because that might scare people. They call it fluoride — and in fact they will even deceive the public and call it “naturally-occurring fluoride.” There’s nothing natural about fluorosilicic acid. If you go to any community water supply where they are dripping so called “fluoride” into the water system, you will find out where they actually get the fluoride — ask them, “Hey, do you dig this out of the ground in natural fluoride deposits?,” and they will tell you “No, we buy it from an industrial waste processing company because it’s cheaper than fluoride out of the ground.” I’ve asked this question myself of people who are in charge of dripping fluoride into the public water supply, and that’s exactly what they have told me. You can verify this yourself and find out just how your local community is poisoning you and your family with this highly toxic waste chemical.
This whole article is good - I just pulled out the fluoride part. You can read it all here.
So being the eco-friendly person I am - I needed new towels and I went with bamboo. I got to use my new towels for the first time today and they are so luxurious! They were well worth the money I didn’t pay for them (I am cheap and I got them free yo! =)
I now want everything I own to be bamboo. I had no idea how simply lovely they could be! I want to feel it against my skin all of the time!
Another great article from the Paleo Weight Loss Coach:
One of the most frequently asked questions about paleo is ‘why does the paleo diet exclude beans and legumes?’ So today I am going to explore that a bit more.
Beans come in many forms, adzuki beans, black beans, broad beans, garbanzo beans, kidney beans, lima beans, mung beans, navy beans, soy beans and the list goes on.
There are also many types of legumes as well, black-eyed peas, chickpeas, lentils, peanuts, and the list goes on.
I Thought Beans and legumes were healthy…
Being a vegetarian for more than 15 years prior to becoming paleo I always thought beans and legumes were good for you, right? I mean that’s where we get protien from as a vego, they are recommended as healthy and full of good nutrients, so naturally we think they are okay.
But all is not as it seems…
Beans And Legumes Are Not Optimal Food Choices
Even though beans and legumes may contain some nutrients, they are not as nutrient dense as fresh fruits and vegetables and therefore not an optimal choice. They also don’t provide the best source of protein, especially for non vegetarians. Fresh meats, fish, eggs, and poultry provide a much wider range of nutrients and the full amino acid chain of proteins. Beans and legumes care not complete proteins so meats, fish, eggs and poultry are obviously a better choice for protein.
Beans and legumes also contain quite a high level of carbohydrates, which may in itself have a negative affect on blood sugar regulation (I won’t go into that now) and that equals havoc on many different levels especially if you are trying to lose weight, have health issues, or any type of metobolic problem.
Beans and Legumes contain Lectins
But researching the story on beans and legumes reveals that they have anti nutrients known as lectins, along with some sugars and other prohibitors that can be very difficult for many people to digest.
So what are lectins exactly?
Lectins are carbohydrate binding proteins present in most plants, especially seeds and tubers like cereals, potatoes, and beans. Until recently their main use was as histology and blood transfusion reagents, but in the past two decades we have realised that many lectins are (a) toxic, inflammatory, or both; (b) resistant to cooking and digestive enzymes; and (c) present in much of our food. Source
So what that means is that beans and legumes are:
Literally… toxic. The problem is that usual preparation methods of prolonged soaking and rinsing, cooking, sprouting, or fermenting only partially neutralizes those toxic substances ” Source
So if that’s the case and preparing beans and legumes only partially fixes the issue then really they are not an optimal food.
But there’s a little bit more to the story…
Your Digestion Rules!
Overall it’s all about your digestion and gut health.
I don’t know about you but if I eat certain types of beans and legumes I get alot of gas! And if you experience any kind of digestive dysfunction such as bloating and gas, or any type of different physical sensation, such as headaches, aching joints and so forth, then these foods do not agree with your digestive system or you.
When we disrupt the way our digestive system functions we are actually compromising our immune system, which is why so many people are getting sick from a modern diet filled with grains, beans, legumes and so forth.
You see, 70% of our immunity resides in our gut. Yes that means that the food we eat is having a direct impact on our immune function and the state of our health overall.
So if you think the food you eat does not affect the way you feel or the state of your health, then think again!
When you consume foods that disagree with your body:
you are constantly disrupting your own digesting process, which is then in a cascade, disrupting your entire immunity…if you are constantly eating foods that are challenging your immunity then you are demanding an immune response at your gut lining all the time” Source
That means our body is requiring resources to fight at the gut level all the time.
Further to this, the lectins in wheat, kidney bean, soy bean and peanuts are also known to increase intestinal permeability, also known as ‘leaky gut syndrome’ or ‘candida overgrowth’. I’ll have to do another post about this, but what it means is that toxins are leaking through your gut lining back into your blood stream, and that’s not good.
But Maybe I Can Eat Beans And Legumes
Well on the other side of the arguement, some may say that beans and legumes are okay. That may be true for some people but the problem is that many of us have been overconsuming grains, beans, legumes and dairy for far too long. Therefore many of us have compromised our immunity and health to the point where we need to cut them out for a while just to know what the issues really are.
You may be able to eat beans and legumes. But if your health is not optimal right now, or if you need to lose weight right now, then eliminate these less than optimal foods and see what happens.
Just remember, if the state of our health comes directly from the foods we consume, and if beans and legumes may be contributing to the problem, then it comes to reason that you may need to exclude them from your diet, maybe not forever but at least for a while.
And even if you choose to reintroduce them, I’d keep them at a minimum since they are not an optimal food.
When it comes to paleo, many people want a one size fits all plan with the rules set out in a clear to understand fashion. But it simply doesn’t work that way. One person may do just fine to eat some kidney beans occasionally, whilst another person won’t. One person my be able to eat sprouted alfalfa, another person won’t. One person may be able to include some dairy, another won’t.
It’s up to you to monitor how food affects your individual body and learn what works for you.
Choose the most optimal foods you can, at least most of the time. And if you choose to eat less than optimal foods, monitor how they react in your body and then make the choice on whether you want to include them or not.
However as already stated, if you’ve got issues, you’ve got issues and it’s best to eliminate all possible contributing factors, and that means no beans and legumes!
I would venture to say that most of us looking for organic products are also concerned about our environment and being eco-friendly. You should keep this thought in mind when over packaging your product, especially when you are using plastic.
You can be organic and eco-friendly at the same time and then you would rock!
1 Zucchini peeled using your Julienne peeler to make them like noodles
1 Red Onion, diced
4 Cloves of garlic, minced
2 Tbsp Basil
Salt and Pepper to taste
Preheat your oven to 350 Degrees Fahrenheit Saute your onions and garlic until your onions start to caramelize and then turn off the heat In your mixing bowl, combine eggs, cooked meat, shredded zucchini, basil, and salt and pepper and mix well Once mixed add in your sauteed onions and garlic and mix well Grease your 9×13 Inch baking dish using oil of your choice, I used olive oil Pour your mixture into your baking dish and place in the preheated oven and cook for 30 minutes or until cooked through and passes the toothpick test. I baked mine for 30 minutes and then finished it for 3 minutes under the broiler on high to brown the top
Hmmm - or should I do this one next week? One or the other for sure. Both will be made! YUM!
If there’s one thing I have realized about spreading the good word of the Paleo Diet, it’s that Americans LOVE their bread. You can take away their ice cream, you can take away their candy, you can even take away their beer, but don’t you dare touch their bread!
I honestly can say that about 80% of the people that I introduce to the Paleo diet will respond with some version of this line, “The diet sounds nice, but you don’t understand, I lllooovvveee bread/pasta way too much to ever go without it.”
I usually respond with some politically correct answer about how they will feel better if they can just go a few weeks without it, but what I am really thinking is…
“No Shit! We all lllooovvveee the taste of bread and pasta!”
The fact that you love the taste of bread, pasta, or any other grain-based products is not some miracle that was bestowed upon you and you alone! We all love breads and pastas, and it’s because of the way wheat reacts in our bodies!
Wheat is Addictive.
If your cravings for your favorite piece of bread or slice of cake feel like an addiction, it’s because you ARE addicted. Gluten, the main protein found in wheat, breaks down into polypeptides that specifically bind to your brain’s morphine receptor. This is the exact receptor for which opiate drugs bind to.
This mechanism is so similar to that of opiate drugs, that Naloxone, the drug used to sober up heroin addicts in the Emergency Room, works just as well to block wheat polypeptides from brain receptors in non-addicts.
What’s wrong with a little high with your sandwich? Nothing. Except for the fact that this euphoric feeling leads to drastically greater calorie intake at every meal without you even realizing it.
“In a study conducted at the Psychiatric Institute of the University of South Carolina, wheat-consuming participants given naloxone consumed 33 percent fewer calories at lunch and 23 percent fewer calories at dinner (a total of approximately 400 calories less over the two meals) than participants given a placebo.“ William Davis, MD, From Wheat Belly
The high from wheat products makes us want to eat MORE and MORE. Just changing the addictive response in our bodies allows us to eat far fewer calories without even changing what we’re eating.
But that’s just part of the story on grains; let’s take a common sense look at some of the products we see throughout our grocery store.
Grains are just one of the Problems with Grain-based products.
Next time you go to the grocery store, take a look at some of the ingredients on the back of the breads, pastas, and cereals you used to buy (Since I know you don’t have any still lying around your house). Even if we were to consider the grains themselves as healthy, almost all grain-based products are loaded with corn syrups, soybean oils, sugars, artificial sweeteners, and a bunch of other ingredients that we can’t recognize or pronounce.
Just look at the ingredients from my favorite “healthy” bread from the past, Nature’s Own 100% Whole Wheat Bread.
Ingredients: Whole Wheat Flour, Water, Sugar, Wheat Gluten, Cane Refinery Syrup, Yeast, Soybean Oil, Salt, Raisin Juice Concentrate, Cultured Wheat Flour, Vinegar, Dough Conditioners (Contains one of more of the following: Sodium Stearoyl Lactylate, Calcium Stearoyl Lactylate, Monoglycerides and/or Diglycerides, Calcium Peroxide, Calcium Iodate, Datem, Ethoxylated Mono- And Diglycerides, Azodicarbonamide, Enzymes), Calcium Sulfate, Soy Lecithin, Wheat Starch, Topping: Wheat Cuts, Wheat Flakes, Wheat Bran, Flaxseed.
Or what about my favorite “healthy” snack, Fiber One Bars.
It’s crazy how many ingredients it requires to make a simple loaf of bread or granola bar. I think we all can agree that neither of these products resemble anything near real food.
But what if you are able to find a product that only contains grains and nothing else? Aren’t grains a great source of complex carbohydrates, fiber, vitamins, and minerals?
Grains are a Poor Source of Carbohydrates.
Dieticians everywhere love to tell you about the benefits of complex carbohydrates that are in so many grain products. The theory behind complex carbohydrates is that because they break down slower in your body, they have less effect on insulin and blood glucose levels. When insulin and blood glucose stay low, your energy stays consistent and body fat is easily utilized as energy.
This is a nice story to tell, but let’s actually dive in and look at the impact grain-based products have on blood sugar and insulin.
The gold standard for measuring insulin and blood sugar impact of any given food is the glycemic index. The higher the glycemic index, the greater the insulin and blood sugar response, and the more likely you are to store fat. Where does wheat bread rank? Near the top with a glycemic index of 71. Right up there with waffles at 76, bagels at 72, cornflakes at 81, and instant oatmeal at 66. To put this into perspective, things like Coca Cola and a Snickers Bar, rank at 58 and 55 respectively. And fruits, such as oranges and peaches, both come in at 42. Courtesy of health.harvard.edu.
Combine this information with our habit of having grain-based products at all of our meals and you have a recipe for chronically elevated blood sugar and insulin levels. Two of the key factors in diabetes, obesity, and aging.
Grains are a Poor Source of Vitamins, Minerals, and Fiber.
Did you know that most of the vitamins, minerals, and fiber that you see in your favorite grain-based products have to be added back after processing just to make it into the finished product? So grain-based products aren’t actually loaded with vitamins and minerals, they just appear that way because of modern science. I don’t know about you, but if someone has to shove a multivitamin into my bread in order to make it healthy, I would rather take the multivitamin on its own and eat something else….like that Snickers Bar.
Gluten is Toxic.
We’ve already mentioned gluten (the protein found in wheat and other grains) for its ability to break down and become addictive, but that’s just the tip of the iceberg for this toxic substance. Gluten is kryptonite for people with Celiac disease. It breaks down the lining of their small intestine which leads to liver disease, dermatitis, diabetes, nerve damage, nutritional deficiencies, and a whole host of autoimmune conditions.
While only a small percentage of the population has Celiac Disease (or at least have been diagnosed), it’s important to note that very few people, if any, are free from the effects of gluten. About 83% of the population develops observable gut inflammation after eating wheat gluten. On top of that, several studies have proven that a greater and greater percentage of the population is developing celiac disease. This isn’t even because our ability to diagnose celiac has gotten better. Even when the standards of diagnosis stay the same, blood samples from today have consistently shown greater instances of Celiac than they did just 20 or 50 years ago.
We tend to think things like acne, IBS, and acid reflux are all part of our genetics, but there is good reason to believe that all of these things are directly caused by the gluten in our diet.
I could go on and on about the dangers of gluten and grains but let me finish by telling you why I personally don’t eat bread anymore.
Why I Don’t Eat Bread.
After seeing all the research, and applying some of my own common sense, it has become pretty clear to me that grain-based products are NOT health foods. They may be dangerous and even deadly for some people, but more importantly, they are not healthy. Does that mean I will never eat another product containing grains for as long as I live? Hell No! I am still going to have the occasional beer, eat the occasional brownie or slice of cake, and I am going to enjoy the hell out of every sip or bite. I will deal with the consequences of those foods later, but I will not feel a single ounce of guilt or remorse as I polish off the entire thing.
A key part of the Superhuman30 is to redefine what constitutes health food, and what constitutes junk food. For me, this means that things like bread, pasta, and cereal never really enter the equation. They definitely don’t fit in the healthy food category, and if I’m going to cheat, I can find a lot tastier things to cheat with. Like chocolate peanut butter ice cream for instance. THAT is something that really sounds worth it to me. Not some turkey sandwich or fiber one cereal.
It’s funny, now that I know I can’t eat gluten I get grossed out passing by the massive amounts of different breads in the bread isle - the thought of how toxic it is to my body makes me shiver!
I sent out my first last night - but I have yet to get one. Does it look different? Or does it look like a message? I know it looks different when you send one. Can you respond? What do you do with it? What is the purpose?
It has been a while since I have juiced. I don’t know why - I always feel better when I do. I just hate cleaning the dang juicer!
So I get it out and start juicing and Kaelyn my four year old comes running up and wanted some. So she made her own concoction of carrots, celery, kale and a few bites of cantaloup and gulped it down. Then the husband wanted some - so he made up his own recipe. Then Lexy, my 12 year old comes in saying Kaelyn was bragging about having fresh juice and she wanted some.
So the whole family got loaded up on fresh, organic veggies tonight. Now I am about deplete of veggies in the house! I guess I shouldn’t complain about that. =)
